Chapter 9

Tyler’s mother had been asleep when he returned home after the attack on The Otherworld. It was just as well, he knew, as there was no way he could explain the last few hours to her. All he could envision as he paced his studio, too wound up to even try to sleep, was the carnage that had ensued. The fact Marin had been shot was at the forefront of his thoughts at that point. He wanted to call him, to make certain Hagen had told the truth that one of the vampires would have healed him. Twice, he took out his phone, his finger pressed to ‘redial’ when he found Marin’s call to him from that afternoon, each time realizing it was his business number and he wouldn’t be there to answer.

Eventually, exhaustion overwhelmed him. He stumbled into his bedroom, collapsing face-down on his bed without undressing, and fell into a deep, nightmare laden sleep.

It was well after eight on Monday morning when he finally awoke. It took him a moment to figure out why he was still wearing his clothes from the previous evening. He wished he hadn’t as everything came flooding back. Trying to shake off the memories, he crawled out of bed, undressed, and went to take a long hot shower, standing under the water until it turned cold.

“At least I’m awake, now,” he muttered, shivering as he dried off. He tossed his dirty clothes in the hamper and got dressed in jeans and an old T-shirt as he didn’t have to go to work. Only then did he check his phone, praying there’d be a message from Marin. There wasn’t, which both scared him and pissed him off. “You could at least call to let me know you’re still alive,” he grumbled angrily.

He knew he was being unreasonable. They were friends and nothing more, as much as he was beginning to wish otherwise. For whatever reason, he was drawn to Marin in ways he never had been with any other man. Knowing him, if he was healed, and they would have done that for him, he probably stuck around the club to help clean up and then went home to get some sleep.

As he left his bedroom, he smelled bacon cooking, and hurried downstairs. His mother was standing at the stove, turning the bacon and tending to eggs frying in a second pan.

“You must have had a good time with Marin last night,” she said with a knowing smile. “I went to bed at eleven and you still weren’t home.”

“It was fun.” Tyler thought fast to come up with something that would satisfy her. “We decided to go to a movie, which turned out to be a double feature. The first one was awful; the second one was excellent which made up for it. Do you want me to make toast and coffee?”

She chuckled. “Check the pot, and yes to toast. You can set the table, too, please.”

“How are you feeling?” he asked belatedly while putting bread in the toaster.
